Arsenal face paying up to £80m if they wish to sign striker Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli this summer as Arsene Wenger continues his laborious hunt for a new striker.

The Frenchman has held an interest in the Argentina striker for almost four years but failed with a string of attempts to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.

Gazzetta World report on Monday morning that he will try one last time to sign the former Real Madrid striker before moving onto other targets.

The Gunners have already failed with an attempt to sign Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy after the 29-year-old scored 24 goals to fire the Foxes to the Premier League title last season under Claudio Ranieri’s guidance.

Gabriel Barbosa, the 19-year-old Brazil international, has hinted he may be about to leave current club Santos after weeks of reports linking him with Arsenal.

Barbosa has scored five goals in 10 matches for his club so far and, after finding the net again this weekend against Ponte Preta, he told the media: “I played as if it was my last game here. Soon you will know something.”

Wellington Silva, the 23-year-old Arsenal fringe player, has appeared to confirm on social media that he is set to join former club Fluminense in the coming days.

Silva liked a post on Instagram which wished him luck upon the move, rumoured to be happening all summer. The post said: “After struggling to obtain a work permit and unproductive loan spells, we wish him the best of luck going forward.”

Arsenal’s new signing Takuma Asano was filmed crying when he bid his club Sanfrecce Hiroshima an emotional goodbye before linking up with the north London outfit this week.

The 21-year-old has delivered a string of impressive performances for the J-League side and is considered one of the brightest talents the country has ever produced – not that you would know it from the reaction of some supporters to his signing.

Asano broke down in tears when he was presented to his former supporters as they delivered him with a heartfelt goodbye. The Japanese youngster is not expected to challenge for a starting berth in Wenger’s side immediately.
