We begin with Arsenal's confirmation of the signing of highly-rated centre-back Gabriel Paulista.

Yesterday the Gunners unveiled their £11.2m signing from Villarreal, and the 24-year-old could make his debut as early as the weekend when Arsenal face Aston Villa.

Keep an eye on Arsene Wenger's press conference ahead of that match for any hints as to whether the Brazilian will slot straight into the team. He is competing with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny for a place.

Raiding Spain

It seems Arsenal scouts have been busy across the Iberian peninsula this winter as the Daily Express reports they are interested in the Valencia left-back Jose Luis Gaya.

The 19-year-old is considered one of the brightest defensive prospects in Spain, and Wenger is understood to be keen on activating a £13.5m release clause in his contract.

But they will face stiff competition for the star youngster, talkSport claimed - especially from Real Madrid.

Going nowhere... for now

And in Portugal, the agent of one of Europe's hottest properties and Arsenal target Jackson Martinez is reported to have ruled out any move this winter.

Henrique Pompeo told Italian media that Martinez "wants to play in Serie A", but added: "It is very unlikely Porto would let him leave in January, because they still need him for the Champions League and to chase Benfica in the table, so consequently Martinez will only move at the end of the season."

The agent named Napoli, Roma, AC Milan and Juventus as possible destinations - comments likely to frustrate English suitors including Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool alongside the Gunners.

Signed on the dotted line

A long-awaited deal to secure Mikel Arteta's future at Arsenal has finally been agreed.

The midfielder - another Spaniard - has signed a one-year contract extension, ending speculation that he was to leave the club when his deal ran out in the summer.

Arteta signed a four-year agreement when joining the club from Everton in 2011 and it is understood the Merseyside club were interesting in bringing the 32-year-old back to Goodison Park should he decide not to extend his stay in north London.

Blues wade in

Chelsea are reported to be looking to hijack Arsene Wenger's attempts to lure Sergio Ramos away from Real Madrid.

The Spain international has been at Real for 10 years now and his reluctance to sign a new deal beyond 2017 has provoked speculation that he is looking for a new challenge.

The 28-year-old would likely need a big offer to draw him away from Madrid, with Manchester United reportedly also monitoring the situation.

Sisso-no

Arsenal look set to miss out on the Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko after the Daily Star reported keeping the French international as one of John Carver's main priorities for the Magpies.

Newcastle fans will know that counts for little after the promises made about Andy Carroll before his sensational £35m deal four years ago - and an offer of at least £20m for Sissoko would likely force a move.
