Premier League January transfer window round-up

Arsene Wenger says it is “not a possibility” that Arsenal will sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in this window, and that he wants Theo Walcott to stay.

The Borussia Dortmund striker has been mooted as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez should the Chilean eventually go to Manchester City, while Walcott’s lack of game time has led to interest from former club Southampton. Wenger was however curt when asked about Aubameyang.

“No, it is not a possibility,” the Arsenal boss said.

As regards Walcott, Wenger was similarly abrupt: “I want him to stay. I heard that [Southampton are interested], yes. Personally I want him to stay.”

Wenger meanwhile revealed that new Greek signing Konstantinos Mavropanos would likely go in loan, probably to a club from Germany. The centre-back has just been bought from PAS Giannina for £1.8m.

“He is with us and the plan is that he goes out on loan somewhere… it can be a German club.

“I prefer him to play where it doesn’t really matter that he plays in the top level and gains experience. He is 20 years old and so he needs for a central defender, he is not ready to start for us so it is important he gets experience.”
