Arsenal have had a bid rejected for Napoli midfielder Jorginho, if Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb are to be believed.

The 24-year-old would bolster Arsene Wenger’s options in defensive midfield, though having already shelled out on the combative Mohamed Elneny and with Francis Coquelin on the mend, it could be argued that the need for a destroyer type has gone.

Jorginho had been deemed surplus to requirements at Stadio San Paolo at the start of the season but has since taken hold of a starting berth in Maurizio Sarri’s side, who currently sit top of Serie A.

Elsewhere, The Sun report that Barcelona’s attempts to sign Celta Vigo forward Nolito have faltered, paving the way for the Gunners to hijack the deal.

The Catalan club hope to sign the 29-year-old as backup to Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar, but he has also regularly been linked with a move to Arsenal and their interest could be reignited.

Onto goalkeeping targets and though Petr Cech has been his solid, dependable self since arriving at Arsenal, he’s not getting any younger. The club are on the lookout for his long-term successor, so could that be Kepa Arrizabalaga?

The 21-year-old Spaniard, dubbed ‘the new David De Gea’, is currently on loan at Rayo Valladolid from Athletic Bilbao, but he could soon switch to the Emirates according to Spanish sports weekly Don Balon.

A youngster who is closer to completing a move to north London is Kelechi Nwakali, according to his brother, at least.

Allwell Nwakali believes that Arsenal are by far and away the best club for his sibling, who helped Nigeria to victory at the Under-17 World Cup last year.

“Arsenal are known to have a good programme for young players,” he said.

“They develop young stars and enhance their careers, and the records are there for anyone to see and admit that we made the right and honourable choice.”

An injury to on-loan Carl Jenkinson may have disrupted Mathieu Debuchy’s plans to leave the Emirates Stadium.

The right-back had looked all but certain to make a switch to either Aston Villa or Sunderland, who are ready to fulfil his desires of first-team football.

Jenkinson, however, is expected to return to Arsenal for treatment having suffered serious knee ligament damage while playing in West Ham United’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Saturday.
