England Under-21s striker Danny Ings says that his move to Liverpool is the opportunity of a lifetime, especially given that he was playing non-league football in the Conference South five years ago.

The 22-year-old is in the Czech Republic with Gareth Southgate’s Under-21s and came on at half-time in the 1-0 win over Sweden on Sunday evening. The striker now looks likely to start the final group game against Italy on Wednesday in Olomouc in which a win for England would guarantee them a place in the semi-finals.

Ings was on loan from Bournemouth at Dorchester Town at the start of the 2010-2011 season, and has made rapid progress since then. Speaking after the win over Sweden, he said: “Words can't describe it, the move that I've got for myself.

“At the same time, I've worked my way from the bottom so it is even more special for me. It is a challenge I am looking forward to. I never sort of get complacent with anything like that and now I've got that move I will work even harder to try and get into that team and be the best professional I can be.”

He joined Liverpool as a free agent after the expiration of his contract at Burnley. Training compensation payable between the two clubs is likely to be decided at tribunal.

Ings said: “It is a massive achievement for me and my family. It is a challenge that I am really looking forward to. I am here at the moment and this is my main focus, but when pre-season comes along I will get my head down and work hard to be the best I can be.”
