Everton are set to reject any offers from Manchester United for their England international defender John Stones, according to reports.

Stones signed a new five-year contract with the Merseyside club last August, and made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees last season.

The Liverpool Echo have reported that Everton will resist any approach by United for Stones.

The report states that Everton value the 21-year-old at more than the £32m Manchester paid to make Eliaquim Mangala the most expensive defender in British football history last summer.

Speaking last April, Toffees' manager Roberto Martinez said of Stones: "I think John has got that sort of ‘leader’ character and probably an Everton character.

"Obviously, John is someone we have made a very strong investment in at a very young age.

"For Everton, he’s a vital player going forward, and for the future. That’s something we pride ourselves on - giving youngsters an opportunity. That’s something we will do for someone like John at Everton."
