Manchester United have turned their attention to Karim Benzema after losing hope that a deal can be reached with Real Madrid for Gareth Bale, it's claimed.

The Red Devils have held a long-term interest in Bale, who they tried to sign when the Wales international left Tottenham, and had hopes a deal could be reached to bring him to Old Trafford this summer. It comes after a difficult second season in Spain for Bale during which he was criticised by Real Madrid fans.

However, yesterday he reiterated his desire to stay and fight for his place under new coach Rafa Benitez, who is thought to see Bale as central to his plans.

“I’m a Real Madrid player and I’ll carry on as normal," said Bale.

“I am enjoying it and hopefully I can continue to. I feel settled. I’m looking forward now to playing and winning more trophies.

“My goal is to keep improving, performing and to win as many titles as I can.”

With Manchester United keen to bring in attacking reinforcements, Benzema has reportedly become a new target. The France international has been a consistent performer at the Bernabeu during his six years at the club. However, to boost their transfer coffers and maintain their tradition of refreshing their squad on a regular basis, it's thought Real Madrid would be open to selling Benzema for around £30m.
