Liverpool transfer news: Javier Manquillo expected to join on two-year loan deal

Spanish right-back will challenge Glen Johnson for a place

Liverpool are closing in on the signature of Javier Manquillo, with reports suggesting a two-year loan deal could be completed in days.

The right-back was understood to have been a target for Arsenal but the Gunners' capture of Mathieu Debuchy has left Liverpool as the front-runners for his services.

The Spain Under-20 player is keen on a move away from Atletico Madrid with his chances limited under Diego Simeone due to the preference for regular starter Juanfran.

At Liverpool Manquillo would find himself competing with Glen Johnson for a starting berth.

The deal with Liverpool is understood to be on a loan basis with a £6m permanent option available.

The arrival of Manquillo would be just the latest in a massive overhaul at Anfield that has already seen Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Emre Can and Rickie Lambert join the club. Despite the flurry of arrivals, Brendan Rodgers is closing in on numerous other targets including Loic Remy, Dejan Lovren and Divock Origi.
