Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick remains in the dark about his Old Trafford future with the ailing club reportedly prepared to wait until Louis van Gaal’s position is resolved.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a move to former club West Ham United or French champions Paris Saint-Germain in recent months.

But reports on Thursday morning, by the Daily Mirror, suggest Carrick is being forced to wait until United make a decision surrounding Van Gaal’s future before settling his own contract situation.

The Dutch manager remains in a perilous position in Manchester with the North West club said to be considering the merits of appointing former Chelsea boss José Mourinho in the summer.

Mourinho has been undergoing a charm offensive with the Old Trafford hierarchy since leaving Stamford Bridge in December but is yet to sign a deal.

United were prematurely dumped out of the Champions League, Europa League and Capital One Cup this campaign but remain in contention to secure a top-four berth in the Premier League.

Carrick’s England future also remains in doubt after the emergence of Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater and Tottenham Hotspur holding midfielder Erik Dier.

The pair have both been named in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the European Championship warm-up friendlies with Germany and the Netherlands this week as the England manager evaluates his options.

With 10 years’ service at United, Carrick is their second-longest serving player behind captain Wayne Rooney and he remains an influential figure within Van Gaal’s changing room.
