Manchester United have made a bid of £56m for Edinson Cavani, according to reports in the Italian media.

The sports daily Tuttosport report that the Paris Saint Germain striker is top of new manager Louis Van Gaal's list of transfer targets.

Cavani forged his reputation in Italy during six years spent at Palermo and Napoli before his big-money move to PSG last summer for around £55m.

However the Uruguayan is reportedly unhappy at being second in the pecking order behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic, after he spent much of last season playing out wide.

It is expected that new United manager Van Gaal will instigate a big overhaul of the squad when he takes charge although the club's lack of Champions League participation may prove an obstacle in player recruitment.

Cavani scored 25 goals in 43 games for PSG last season and will be one of the biggest threats to England's defence when they meet Uruguay in the group stages of the World Cup.
