Premier League transfer target Marco Reus has ended intense speculation about his future after signing a new contract with Borussia Dortmund that runs until 2019, the club have confirmed.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs including Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, while Real Madrid were also in the running to sign the forward. However, with talk of an exit at the end of the season due to a £20m release clause in his contract, Dortmund have moved to tie him down to the club and prevent him from leaving the Signal Iduna Park for significantly less than his true value.

A statement published on read: "Wonderful news for the nearly 10 million fans of Borussia Dortmund: the player courted by several top European clubs, Marco Reus, has prematurely extended his contract with the eight-time German champions until June 30, 2019."

Germany international Reus joined Dortmund in 2012 after agreeing a 17m euros (£12.6m) transfer from fellow Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach. While there were fears over his future, Reus still had two years to run on his existing deal, but has signed with the club until 2019 and will set about helping the 2013 Champions League runners-up avoid relegation this season, with Dortmund sitting in 16th position in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund's managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke said: "We never let ourselves be distracted by all the rumours and, while a change is often seen as a good opportunity, this exceptional player has deliberately opted for a future with Dortmund.

"Marco can shape a new era in Dortmund, just like Uwe Seeler did with Hamburg and like Steven Gerrard has with Liverpool.

"The fact Marco has made this decision in the middle of a sporting crisis for BVB shows a high level of loyalty, of which we are very proud."

Reus added: "I am very happy with my decision to stick with BVB. Dortmund is my home town and my club is Borussia.

"I look forward to enjoying a successful future with our team, with our fantastic fans behind us.

"There is plenty for us to do, and I want to tackle it all head on!"
