Morgan Schneiderlin has returned to Southampton for pre-season training, but the midfielder could be a Manchester United player by the end of the week.

25-year-old Schneiderlin joined the rest of the Saints squad in returning early for pre-season with the south coast club facing a Europa League qualifying campaign to deal with, having finished seventh in last season’s Premier League.

Their summer has been far more stable than this time last year, when Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren were snapped up by Liverpool, Luke Shaw joined Manchester United and Arsenal lured Calum Chambers to the Emirates.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman confirmed on Monday that United are yet to make a serious bid and admitted that it was a case of “waiting” to see what will happen with their interest in the France international.

"We have the situation with Morgan Schneiderlin, we will have to wait what will happen,” said Koeman. “Until now, we have not a serious bid for him from Man United.

"We will wait, but OK – that’s business that normally starts from now. It’s no problem – it’s the first day [of the transfer window].

"We have the experience from last season – it will be not the same this season, but we are prepared for everything. I am looking forward for another good season."

However, The Telegraph is reporting that Schneiderlin will undergo a medical with United within the next 48 hours, and it’s believed that the deal to bring him to Old Trafford will be finalised by the end of this week.

With United making a quick start to their transfer business in the form of the £23m signing of Memphis Depay before the end of the season, progress with their squad revamp has slowed somewhat and the focus has shifted to trying to cling on to goalkeeper David De Gea.

Real Madrid are supremely confident that they can lure the 24-year-old to the Santiago Bernabeu, and with United appearing to be facing a losing battle in their bid to hold on to the Spaniard for at least another season when his contract expires, it remains to be seen if United manager Louis van Gaal will mount a move for a replacement goalkeeper.
