Manchester United could be set to win the race to sign World Cup winner Sami Khedira, with the club reportedly ready to pay the midfielder £200,000-a-week in wages.

The Real Madrid player will be out of contract in the summer and has already signalled he won't be signing a new deal at the Bernabeu.

That's led to a scramble for the 28-year-old defensive midfielder's services - a scrap that United are said to be winning.

According to the Daily Star, Khedira has been 'offered' to Old Trafford if they are willing to pay him £200,000-a-week. Whilst the wage demands are off-putting, the lack of any transfer fee could see them sanctioned.

Manchester United have also been linked with Roma's Kevin Strootman as they seek to bolster the centre of midfield, however the Dutchman's ongoing injury problems are thought to be a concern, leading to Khedira's emergence as the leading contender of the two to arrive at Old Trafford this summer.

If Louis van Gaal is to win any battle for Khedira, he will have to fend off interest from Chelsea, where Jose Mourinho may be able to use his influence having worked with the German at Real Madrid. Arsenal and Liverpool are also admirers whilst a host of teams in Germany would be keen to sign him.
