Liverpool agree fee with Sunderland for Simon Mignolet with medical planned for next week

Sunderland goalkeeper set for Anfield switch amid team's continuing negotiations over fee with personal terms and medical set for discussion next week

Liverpool have agreed a fee with SUnderland for goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, with the Belgian set to discuss personal terms and complete a medical early next week.

Liverpool have continued their pro-active start to the transfer window following the addition of defender Kolo Toure on a free transfer.

Negotiations have been on-going between the two clubs but Press Association Sport understands that the deal is at a point where further personal terms and the organisation of a medical can be discussed.

With his arrival at Anfield moving closer with each passing day, current shot-stopper Pepe Reina’s future continues to be thrown into doubt despite the Spaniard’s claims yesterday that his future lies with the Reds.

He was linked earlier in the year with a return to his former club Barcelona to replace Victor Valdes, who has since announced that he will remain with the La Liga champions for another season.

Reina announced that he hopes to extend his stay beyond the three years left on his current contract, but did concede that if a bigger club came in for him it would be a good opportunity.

Boss Brendan Rodgers stated that he wanted competition for all positions in his squad, and the addition of Mignolet would certainly provide just that for Reina, who featured in Spain’s 10-0 Confederations Cup mauling of Tahiti last night.

Rodgers is yet to comment though on whether Mignolet is being brought in to provide competition or replace his current keeper, although no approach has been received for Reina.

It could easily play-out that Liverpool end up with two high profile and high earning goalkeepers that want to be first choice in a World Cup year, although there is still two months left of the current transfer window.
