Likeliest arrival
Southampton are still expected to make the signing of Uruguayan winger Gaston Ramirez from Bologna before the transfer deadline, despite the deal appearing to have stalled over the last couple of weeks. A number of other clubs have been linked with Ramirez, but Southampton are reportedly close to completing an £11m deal for the 21-year-old in the next couple of days.

The Saints have been linked with Ajax defender Nicolai Boilesen. The 20-year old Danish international has said that he is flattered with the interest being shown in him by Premier League clubs, with West Ham and Arsenal also reportedly interested. Nigel Adkins is however confident of pulling off a deal worth about £5m.

Adkins seems keen to add another defender to his squad before the end of the week and there has been speculation that he is interested in swooping for Birmingham's Curtis Davies. Norwich were originally favourites to sign the ex-West Brom defender, however since they signed Sebastian Bassong, their interest in Davies has dropped with Southampton now leading the race.

Southampton are reported to have stepped up their interest for highly-rated Blackpool striker Matt Phillips with a £6m bid. The Saints have continued their pursuit for the player despite Blackpool manager Ian Holloway hitting out at an unnamed club - widely thought to be Southampton - for making an illegal approach for Phillips earlier in the summer.

Long, long shot
Japanese international captain Maya Yoshida has been linked with a potential move to St Mary's for an approximate fee of £2m. The central defender currently plays for VVV Venlo in Holland and it is thought that Adkins, who originally denied having any interest in the player, is keen to bring him to the club in an attempt to bolster the promoted side's fragile back line.
