Steven Gerrard has revealed how Tottenham were among a number of clubs that attempted to sign him before he decided to leave Liverpool and join MLS side LA Galaxy.

Gerrard ended a 17-year professional career at Anfield this summer after leaving the club at the end of the season, but he insists that a Premier League switch was never on the cards because of his love for the Reds.

Writing for the Daily Mail as part of their syndication of his new autobiography, Steven Gerrard: My Story, the former England captain revealed how a number of European clubs attempted to sign him including Spurs and David Moyes’ Real Sociedad.

“The first offer came from Besiktas, then managed by Slaven Bilic,” Gerrard said. “Monaco were next. They came in strong. Paris Saint-Germain were also very keen. David Moyes called my agent a couple of times, to see whether I would be interested in playing for him at Real Sociedad.

“A few English clubs called but I wouldn’t play against Liverpool. There was interest from Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. It was good to know he still rated me. I was sure I could play in the Premier League for another year but there would not have been much of a buzz doing the same thing all over again with Tottenham.”

Despite the allure of playing for financial heavyweight PSG or French rivals Monaco, Gerrard still questioned whether a potential European match against Liverpool would leave him in the right frame of mind to face his former side.

“I was slightly interested in PSG and Monaco but how could I come back to Anfield if there was a European game?”

Gerrard has already confirmed he would have been willing to stay at Anfield had the right coaching role been offered to him, but the likelihood of a return on the field appears to have been ruled out as Gerrard will not re-join the club on loan this winter.
