Read: 'Chelsea's attempt to buy all the English internationals they can think of, even if - as in the case of Glen Johnson - they already have two senior players in that position - Bosingwa and Ivanovich'.
Chelsea's naked ambition in the transfer market almost rivals City's, though you can tell one billionaire owner is keener to spend lavishly than the other, this time around. The problem is, the Chelsea first team team does not suit young or up-and-coming players. The only individual of any real quality to have 'emerged' through their ranks is Mikel, and he's not exactly lighting the world.
The way I see it, in spite of his success, Mourinho left a team of 25+ year olds, and did virtually nothing for youth development during his time there. Compare that to United or Liverpool, teams that have balanced experience with youth and have consistently reared players from the ground up, as it were. (If you have any doubts, here's a list of Liverpool players bought at the age of 23 or below: Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Alonso, Mascherano, Torres, Ngog, Lucas, Insua, Arbeloa, Babel).
