Middlesbrough club officials were yesterday working hard to push home their interest in the French midfielder Didier Digard, having allowed Fabio Rochemback and Gaizka Mendieta to leave the Riverside this summer. The £4m-rated Paris St-Germain 21-year-old has been on Teesside for a medical examination and to open talks. Boro are optimistic that they will beat Newcastle and Portsmouth to his signature.

Andranik moves to the Cottage

Roy Hodgson's rebuilding programme has continued with the signing of the Iranian defensive midfielder Andranik Teymourian on a free transfer from Bolton. Andranik, 25, who has nine caps, joined Wanderers in 2006 and featured in their Uefa Cup run last season. He has signed a two-year deal.

Evra agrees extension

Patrice Evra has signed a four-year contract extension at Old Trafford. The France defender, 27, who did not feature in his country's disappointing goalless draw with Romania at Euro 2008 on Monday, had another year to run on his present deal. "The last two-and-a-half seasons have been the start of a dream for me," he said. "It is a pleasure and an honour to be part of this fantastic side."

Lafferty bids are wide of the mark

The club insist they have still not received an acceptable offer for Kyle Lafferty after Celtic moved into pole position for the striker. Reports claim that Celtic have offered £2.75m plus Derek Riordan, and the promise of a friendly match, for the Northern Ireland international. Burnley are thought to want around £4m.
