Transfer news: Arsenal reportedly interested in summer move to bring back former captain Robin van Persie from Manchester United

Striker is believed to be unsettled at Old Trafford with reports suggesting Arsene Wenger is interested in bringing him back to the Emirates

Arsenal are reportedly working on a move that could see former captain Robin van Persie tempted to rejoin the club from Manchester United at the end of the season, just two years after leaving the club.

The 30-year-old is believed to be unsettled at United having become fed up with life at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement last season. The Metro is reporting that the Dutch captain is considering leaving United at the end of the season, with claims in his homeland that the Gunners want him back at the Emirates.

It is believed that Arsene Wenger has already met with Van Persie’s agent to test the water and see whether a summer move could be on the cards. His exit left the north London club’s fans with an extremely bitter taste in their mouth, and despite calling for Wenger to sign a striker in January to assist Olivier Giroud, a potential return of Van Persie would be hard for many to accept.

Having pushed for a move away from Arsenal in the 2012 summer transfer window, Van Persie got his wished when Wenger agreed a £24m deal with Ferguson given that the striker only had a year remaining on his contract. Admitting he moved with a determination to win silverware, Van Persie succeeded at the first attempting, finishing as the Premier League’s top goalscorers as United clinched the title before saying farewell to their manager.

Under David Moyes, the United squad have looked a shadow of their former self, and Van Persie has spent a large chunk of the season on the sidelines though injury, having returned to action last month.

The report goes on to claim that Van Persie could even be willing to take a cut on his current £200,000-a-week wage in order to leave the Red Devils, with Wenger even going as far as speaking to the club's board to finance a transfer.

Wenger has recently refused to rule out a return move for Van Persie, having originally signed him in 2004 from Feyenoord. The 64-year-old Frenchman is keen on bringing in a world-class striker, having shown his new intent to splash out on new signings with last summer’s acquisition of Van Persie.
