Transfer news: David Moyes reiterates that Wayne Rooney will not leave Manchester United and sets August 6 as his return date

David Moyes has once again reiterated that Wayne Rooney will not leave Manchester United and has instead said that the striker is due to make his return from injury in on August 6.

Rooney was sent home from United’s pre-season tour of Asia on the day they arrived, having picked up a hamstring injury before flying out to Thailand.

Moyes was speaking after seeing his side succumb to their second defeat in three games, losing 3-2 to Yokohama F Marinos.

He said: “Yes. He (Rooney) is coming on. He is doing light jogging now. The feedback I am getting from home is that he is progressing. We have said he is not for sale and that hasn’t changed.

Rooney is said to be “angry and confused” according to sources close to the England international over Moyes’ words that he may not be first-choice at Old Trafford.

Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Rooney had asked for a transfer away from the club, with Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho making it no secret that he wants to bring the forward to Stamford Bridge.

Moyes was unhappy with his side’s performance this morning, though he couldn’t fault there effort in the Japanese heat as they look to find their match fitness ahead of the Community Shield encounter with Wigan Athletic on August 10.

“I am disappointed with the goals we conceded. We had a lot of opportunities to finish the game off. We had great chances at 2-1 and had other chances after that. We didn’t take them. It was a tough game. They are decent and played well,” he said.

“The biggest thing was the effort the players had to put in. The players worked really hard. You could tell how hot it was and we were trying to get as many of them through 90 minutes as possible. Some did very well and we were pleased with that.”

Japanese international Shinji Kagawa picked up the man-of-the-match award for the friendly, despite only playing for 30 minutes, leading Moyes to question the decision at the Yokohama Stadium.

“It was the first time I had seen him play,” admitted Moyes. “He has a great chance to score and almost another chance when Ashley Young could have played him in. If he had scored then maybe the man of the match award would have been justified! I was pleased to have him back, though.”
