Transfer round-up: David Moyes rebuffed again as Bilbao reject Manchester United's Ander Herrera bid

Manchester United have had a second major transfer bid turned down in the space of two days – this time for the Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

The 24-year-old is understood to have a buyout clause of £30.75m. He is yet to make his full international debut for Spain, although he did play in their Under-21s team who were European champions two years ago. He also played against United in the Europa League last year.

United are yet to make progress in their attempt to sign Everton's Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini. The club have made four bids for Baines, two of which have been joint offers including Fellaini. The latest, worth £36m excluding add-ons, has been rejected on the basis that Everton value Fellaini at £23.5m as per his now expired buyout clause.

By that rationale the club says that the price offered for Baines, £12.5m, is too low. It would be Everton's preference to keep Baines and sell Fellaini but it is the left-back United are most keen on. Baines would like the deal to go ahead. He is in the squad for tomorrow's game against Cardiff City.

The Bilbao president, Josu Urrutia, confirmed yesterday that his club had received an offer for Herrera. He said: "Our objective as a club is not to make money through our players, but to have the best performances as possible.

"To break a contract with Athletic, first they have to tell us they want to leave, and that's not the case with Ander. Then they have to pay the buyout clause in his contract, and that's not the case here either."

Elsewhere, Chelsea's spending spree looks set to continue with the purchase of the Ghana winger Christian Atsu for £3.5m. With an abundance of wingers already at the club following the arrival of Willian this week, he is likely to be loaned straight back to Porto, but Jose Mourinho has turned down a similar approach from Ajax to take midfielder Marco van Ginkel for the season.

The England Under-21 midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah has signed a new five-year contract at Chelsea.The 18-year-old has yet to make a first-team appearance but was involved in the club's pre-season tour of Asia after impressing on loan at Watford last season. "He's a very, very good player and I like him very, very much. I am very impressed. For sure he is a Chelsea player," said manager Jose Mourinho.

Cardiff City and Crystal Palace are both in the frame to sign Ricardo Vaz Te from West Ham after he submitted a transfer request. Manager Sam Allardyce admitted he is expecting offers for the Portuguese winger this weekend. West Ham could opt for the former Manchester City striker Felipe Caicedo as a replacement, while Palace are also hoping to sign the Mali winger Jimmy Kébé from Reading and are reported to have reopened talks with the Arsenal striker Niklas Bendtner.

Midfielder Ki Sung-yueng is set to join Sunderland from Swansea on a season-long loan and will become manager Paolo Di Canio's 12th signing of the summer. The South Korean joined Swansea for £5.5m from Celtic last year but is now on the fringes of the squad after the signings of Jose Canas and Jonjo Shelvey.

South Wales rivals Cardiff completed their sixth summer signing with the acquisition of Uruguay Under-20 international centre-half Maximiliano Amondarain last night. Amondarain was part of the Uruguay Under-20's squad that finished runners-up to France in the World Cup in Turkey last month.

In Italy, Milan sold Kevin-Prince Boateng to Schalke two days after the former Tottenham and Portsmouth midfielder scored twice in the 3-0 Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven. They then brought Italy striker Alessandro Matri back to the club from Juventus and, with their place in the Champions League group stages now guaranteed, are being heavily linked with Japanese playmaker Keisuke Honda, currently with CSKA Moscow.
