England vice-captain Jordan Nobbs has been ruled out of the 2019 World Cup after rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament in Arsenal’s FA Women’s Super League victory over Everton last month.

The 2016 England player of the year’s absence is a major blow to Phil Neville’s side, with the 56-cap midfielder being a key figure in England’s undefeated qualifying campaign for the tournament.

Nobbs has scored eight goals for the Gunners this season but twisted her knee in an awkward collision with Everton’s Chloe Kelly and received oxygen when she was stretchered off the pitch.

And today the FA have confirmed fears that the 25-year-old will not be able to recover in time for the tournament, which begins in June, and is facing up to nine months on the sidelines.

England coach Phil Neville said: “We are all wishing Jordan a speedy recovery and will be supporting her every step of the way throughout her rehabilitation process.

“She is an invaluable member of the Lionesses squad and played a huge part in helping us secure our place at next summer’s Women’s World Cup finals in France.

“Naturally we are disappointed that a player of Jordan’s ability and importance will not be able to take part in the World Cup, but the priority is that she returns to full fitness and can look forward to many exciting years ahead playing for both her club and country.”
