Joe Hart should be England's No 1 goalkeeper for Russia World Cup, says David Seaman

The former England 'keeper has thrown his support behind Hart whose place in Gareth Southgate's team has fallen under scrutiny

David Seaman says Joe Hart should still be England's No 1 goalkeeper for Russia 2018 and insisted he is still the best option available.

The 30-year-old has come under scrutiny for a series of below-par performances for West Ham United and faces fierce competition for his international place from Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford.

Seaman, who played for England in two World Cups at 1998 and 2002, has however backed Hart.

“For me, the best keeper is still Joe Hart," Seaman said ahead of the World Cup draw in Moscow. "He has the experience and has got that especially in the Champions League.

“The others are not far behind, [Fraser] Forster and the rest, but I still think Hart is the best."

Seaman also said the key for the England side as a whole will be to find a good level in the run-up to the tournament.

“There’s many things that we have to do, it all has to come together and we must hit the form we show in qualifying into the tournament.

“Looking forward into Russia, we all have to play really well, all of our players have to bring their A game and deliver on the big stage."

Seaman added that Harry Kane would show himself as one of the best strikers in the world in Russia.

“This gives him the chance to prove himself on the biggest stage of all. You watch him in the Premier League and he has got great technical ability and technique.

“But now he has got the chance to do it on the world stage and if he can do that then that would give England a big chance.”
