Speed is confident Wales can spoil the party

Gary Speed believes Wales can halt England's drive towards qualifying for the European Championships next year.

The Welsh gave England a helping hand towards the 2012 finals by producing a shock 2-1 win in Cardiff over Montenegro, their rivals to win Group G.

Victory for England over Wales at Wembley on Tuesday would now leave them needing only one point to reach the finals in Poland and Ukraine. But the Wales manager said: "There will be no more favours. We can go to Wembley and get a result. We have learnt a lot from the England game first time around and also [the 2-1 defeat in] the Australia match last month.

"England will be a different challenge to Montenegro because of the quality they have. It will be tough but we will give it our best shot. We want to win every game we play, but we now have the confidence to get results."

England cruised to victory at the Millennium Stadium last March after early strikes from Frank Lampard and Darren Bent, but Speed expects a different outcome in north London. "We think we can hurt England and this will be a different Wales from the last game," he said. "It has been a tough six months, but we learnt from that experience. We have great ability and potential in the squad."

Wales will be without the suspended Craig Bellamy and David Vaughan, but England will still have to stop dangerman Gareth Bale. The Tottenham winger said: "The performance against Montenegro was the best under Gary. The victory is a step in the right direction and hopefully now it can be a turning point."

Bellamy was unhappy with the Italin referee Luca Banti against Montenegro for wrecking his dream of playing at Wembley for the first time. He said: "The ref was booking everyone in the first half. He calmed down a bit in the second half but the damage was done for me. It is disappointing."
