American athletes won 21 medals, including nine golds, to dominate the world junior championships, which ended here on Sunday. On the final day of competition, the United States won four of the 11 finals contested before a capacity crowd of 35,000.

The Americans won the men's sprint relay and both the 4 x 400m relays. In the women's event, however, they were run close by Britain, Lashinda Demus running on strongly in the stretch to catch and beat Lisa Miller into second place.

While Britain's men failed to win a single medal, the women returned with a gold, silver and bronze. The sprint relay team took bronze to add to the gold which Vernicha James won in the 200m. Lisa Dobriskey narrowly failed to add to the medal tally, finishing fourth after an excellent run in the 1500m final..
