Athletics: Edwards leads small British band

Jonathan Edwards will be one of only five Britons in action when he contests his 15th triple jump final of the season in the summer's penultimate Golden League meeting in Brussels tonight.

"I'll be here until the bitter end. It's been a long hard slog but I'm up for it," said Edwards, who will also compete in next Friday's final Golden League fixture in Berlin, the IAAF Grand Prix final on 14 September and the World Cup final in Madrid the following weekend.

The most notable British absentee is Dwain Chambers, who is recovering from flu after beating Tim Montgomery and Maurice Greene at Crystal Palace a week ago. In his absence, Mark Lewis-Francis will take on the pair over 100 metres. Marlon Devonish contests the 200m, while Karl Keska faces 19 Africans in the 10,000m.

The Commonwealth champion, Kelly Holmes, still suffering from the viral illness which kept her out of London, has withdrawn from the 1500m, leaving Jo Pavey, in the 3000m, as the only British contestant.

Marion Jones is one of four still in with a chance of sharing the jackpot of 50 kilograms of gold for any athletes who win at all seven meetings. The other contenders are the Mexican 400m runner Ana Guevara, the 400m hurdler Felix Sanchez, from the Dominican Republic, and Morocco's 1,500m world record holder Hicham El Guerrouj.
