A second urine sample supplied by Germany's former Olympic champion Dieter Baumann also showed traces of nandrolone, a banned steroid, the German athletics federation (DLV) said today.

A second urine sample supplied by Germany's former Olympic champion Dieter Baumann also showed traces of nandrolone, a banned steroid, the German athletics federation (DLV) said today.

The result of Baumann's so-called B sample was announced by a lab in Kreischa, one of the two labs that conducted the tests.

Baumann, who won the gold medal in 5,000 meters at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, now faces a two-year ban.

He has been suspended since November 19, after his A sample showed traces of nandrolone 10 times over the permitted level following out-of-competition tests.

Baumann, who had earned a clean reputation as one of the most vocal critics of doping in German sports, has denied taking any drugs.

The case took on a bizarre twist when police detected nandrolone in a toothpaste used by Baumann at his home.
