George Groves suffers facial injury in 'minor training accident' after falling over on a Royal Marines boat out at sea

Groves later tweeted that he had suffered a black eye but that his world title fight with Badou Jack will go ahead as planned

George Groves suffered a "minor training incident" while taking part in an exercise on a Royal Marines boat in Plymouth, but his promoters have insisted it will not have any impact on his world title shot against Badou Jack later this year.

British super-middleweight Groves is set to face American Jack in either August or September for his WBC world title, but he was involved in a rather bizarre incident while out at sea with the Royal Marines.

It was originally reported that Groves may have suffered a suspected fractured eye socket and may have been knocked unconscious, but the boxer and his promoter quickly player down the seriousness of the incident.

Taking to Twitter after the injury was suffered, Groves said: "10 minutes in the boat and I get a black eye and twisted sock! Not enough to hold me back though! It’s a pirates life for me!”

His promoters, Kalle and Nisse Sauerland, added: “Can confirm that @StGeorgeGroves been involved in minor training incident 2day. Does NOT affect his World Championship challenge #AndTheNew.”

Kalle Sauerland later told Sky Sports News HQ: "It was a minor incident today that took place on a boat. He was down in Plymouth training with the Royal Marines.

"He went to hospital for a routine check and the scans and the X-rays showed that he was free to go, and he's on his way back to London now.

"According to George it all went very quick, he ended up falling over. It sounds very, very extravagant and it all took place on a Royal Marine boat but I think at the end of the day we'll be back down to training this week."
