Revealed: Conor McGregor landed 30 more punches than Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather - in two fewer rounds

Mayweather withstood a barrage of early pressure to eventually see off McGregor with a 10th round stoppage but the Irishman impressed on his professional debut

Conor McGregor landed more punches against Floyd Mayweather on his professional boxing debut than Manny Pacquiao managed two years ago - and did so in two fewer rounds.

Mayweather, who moved to 50-0 with the 10th round win, withstood a barrage of early pressure from UFC star McGregor before taking control of the fight and referee Robert Byrd waving it off late.

The performance of McGregor, who had never before stepped into a ring in a professional bout, was roundly praised as he held his own against one of the premier fighters of his generation.

And the stats bear that out with the Irishman actually landing more punches than his counterpart in the opening portion of the fight and significantly more than Pacquiao managed two years ago where he was comfortably outpointed in the richest fight in history.

McGregor landed 111 of the 430 punches he threw, a percentage of 26 at the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night. That compares well against Pacquiao who landed only 81 of the 429 shots he threw in 2015, a percentage of just 19.

Mayweather confirmed afterwards that McGregor had surprised him with just how well he performed.

"He is a tough competitor and I thought we gave the fans what they wanted to see," he said. "He is a lot better than I thought he was, he used different angles and was a tough competitor but I was the better man tonight.

"Our game-plan was to take our time, let him shoot all his heavy shots early on and then take him down at the end, down the stretch. We know in the MMA he fights 25 minutes real hard and after that he starts to slow down.

"I guaranteed this fight wouldn't go the distance. A win is a win."

Mayweather's victory takes his record to an unprecedented 50-0 and he insists this was his last outing in the ring - for real this time: "This was my last fight tonight, my last fight, for sure. I chose the right dance partner to dance with."
