Compared with Athens, where Funnell struggled to contain Primmore's Pride in the cross-country before winning individual bronze and team silver medals, her performance on Sue and Lizzie Bunn's stallion looked like a pleasure ride. She now plans to take the 14-year-old to Pau next month for the Eventing World Cup Final.

Matthew Wright, the talented 21-year-old Briton who was ninth at Badminton this year, was clear and within the time in both the cross-country and show jumping, advancing from equal 24th after the dressage to take second place on Park Pilot, with New Zealand's Andrew Nicholson third on Flush Banker.
