Hockey: Schubert lifts Australia win
Australia took the honours on the fourth day of the Champions Trophy here yesterday with a useful 4-1 win against India.
After a high-speed opening 30 minutes the first half ended in a dramatic five minutes which included a fine penalty-stroke save by India's goalkeeper, Devesh Chauhan, from Brent Livermore and a fortuitous opening goal from Australia's Grant Schubert.
Ten minutes into the second half Schubert collected his second from close quarters, finishing off a four-man Australian move. A minute later Troy Elder converted a penalty stroke for Australia's third. Although Dilip Tirkey pulled a goal back for India, an unmarked Schubert completed his hat-trick.
Australia's women followed up their 3-0 win against Argentina, the World Champions, in their opening game with a 3-1 win yesterday against Germany.
The Germans went into the interval leading 1-0 with a 17th-minute goal from Alexandra Kollmar but two goals inside three minutes from Julie Towers early in the second half turned the game Australia's way. Towers completed her hat-trick in the 62nd minute.
