O'Sullivan eyes record

Sonia O'Sullivan has her eyes on another landmark after producing the second-fastest legal time to win Saturday's five-mile road race here. O'Sullivan clocked 24min 50sec despite being alone for the last mile and a half around the Queen's summer residence.

The Irish runner originally thought she was world record holder but that all changed last week. Instead the 1998 European 5,000 and 10,000 metres gold medallist was informed that the 24min 27sec she set in Loughrea, Ireland, last October had been achieved on a downhill course.

O'Sullivan said: "I was running only to win, I wasn't after any world record but the way I did perform told me it wouldn't be hard to break the record. Maybe Loughrea was a legal performance. Certainly I ran a lot faster there and it took a lot more out of me than it did today."

With the time truly legal O'Sullivan showed she is already well on the way to regaining her top form.

Lesotho's Commonwealth champion, Thabiso Moqhali, inflicted a rare reversal on Kenyan runners when he won the Belgrade Marathon on Saturday. To make matters worse for the Kenyans Moqbali's colleague Percy Sephooa finished second.

Moqhali won in 2hr 15min 08 sec with Sephoaa 12 seconds behind. The Kenyans did not even get on to the winners' rostrum, since third palace was taken by South Africa's Lawrence Peu. Kenya finally figured through Jimmy Muindi in fourth and he lead a posse of compatriots home.
