Ahead of his defence of the Hickstead Derby title tomorrow on Skip Two Ramiro, Guy Williams got into the winning habit by triumphing in the Hickstead Master's Challenge yesterday on Titus.

The competition, initially against the clock, concluded with combinations having to clear four successive gate fences following the timed section. Williams came up trumps on both fronts, going clear in 47.18 seconds before clearing the gates and collecting the £1,500 first prize.

Shane Breen and Magic Fox finished tied for second with Nick Charles and Murka's Midnight Lady on 47.83. Williams said: "The horse has won six classes in the past two weeks. He's really quick, with a massive stride." The meeting continues today with the Derby Trophy.
