Sport in brief: Adlington seals hat-trick with victory in 400m freestyle

Swimming: Rebecca Adlington served notice to the rest of the world she has returned to the sort of form that guided her to two Olympic titles as she rounded off her British Gas Swimming Championships with victory in the 400m freestyle to secure a hat-trick of titles.

The 21-year-old completely dominated over eight lengths and touched in four minutes 05.50 seconds to equal the world's fastest time this year.

Jazmin Carlin was second, almost four seconds adrift, with Sasha Matthews in third. World Championship silver medallist Joanne Jackson was absent after she withdrew because of her ongoing medical problems.

Adlington said: "I'm really pleased with that, I've been so tired all day and I didn't get a very good night's sleep so I'm just looking forward to having a week off."

Soderling charges into Miami semis

Tennis: Robin Soderling comfortably brushed aside Mikhail Youzhny to reach the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, winning 6-1, 6-4. Youzhny shocked the No 5 seed by breaking his serve in the first game of the match but Soderling reacted in style, winning the next seven games to go a set up.

Both players were poor on serve in the second set and there were four successive breaks before Soderling broke the No 13 seed's serve for the sixth time and then served out for the match. The Swede will meet Tomas Berdych after the Czech saw off Fernando Verdasco.

In the women's event, Kim Clijsters overcame compatriot Justine Henin in a thrilling clash to reach the final, where she will meet Venus Williams. Clijsters triumphed over Henin 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (8-6). Clijsters started superbly but Henin rallied to ensure the match went to three sets.
