Swimming: Gilchrist's golden touch caps rich return for GB

Kris Gilchrist claimed Great Britain's third gold medal of the World Short-Course Championships when he edged the 200 metres breaststroke in Manchester last night. On a rewarding night for the hosts, Liam Tancock, Mark Foster, Lizzie Simmonds and Fran Halsall all took silver while Robbie Renwick and Jo Jackson won bronze.

Gilchrist battled it out with Ukrainian Igor Borysik, and the pair were neck and neck coming down the final length but the Scot touched out his opponent in 2mins 06.18secs.

Duje Draganja set a new world record of 20.81secs to beat Foster into second place in the 50m freestyle as the 37-year-old won his 47th international medal. Simmonds, the 2007 four-time European junior champion, beat the old world record in the 200m backstroke by more than a second, but was still runner-up as Kirsty Coventry took her third gold medal and second world record of the meet.

Halsall claimed her first senior individual medal in the 100m freestyle behind Marleen Veldhuis, the Dutch 50m long-course world record holder.

Renwick reduced the British record by more than two seconds to finish third in the 400m freestyle behind defending champion Yuri Prilukov and former Olympic silver medallist Massimiliano Rosolino.

Jackson took bronze in the women's equivalent after just being touched out for second in 4:01.11 to lower her own British record.

Tancock chalked up his second medal of the meet when he finished second to Ryan Lochte, who set a world record, in the 200m individual medley. James Goddard took the bronze medal as Britons filled second and third places.

The women's 4x100m medley relay set a new European record as they came third behind the United States and Australia in a race won in a world record time of 3:51.36.
