The sporting week ahead (03/11/13)

Today

It didn't take much for eccentric Cardiff owner Vincent Tan to become a figure of fun among Swansea fans, but he really should have known better than to wear his Redbirds shirt over a button-down shirt and tuck them both inside his trousers. There will be much mirth among the visiting fans if he adopts a similar style today. But anything that takes the heat out of a potentially nasty derby will be welcome.

In the day's early kick-off Everton host Tottenham. Or boring, boring Tottenham, as they are now known. In Formula One, the season dribbles away, starting with today's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Tomorrow

Andy Murray's season-ending injury was always going to be bad news for London's ATP Tour finals, who have had to scratch their marketing campaign. But there is still plenty of top-quality talent on offer, including Nadal, Djokovic and Federer. Given that there are only three teams in it, Rugby League's World Cup seems a ridiculously overblown competition, and Papua New Guinea v Samoa on a Monday night hardly seems worth staying in for, or even – for those near Hull – going out to.

Tuesday

The Manchester clubs are well placed to qualify for the next stage of the Champions' League with United travelling to Real Sociedad and City hosting CSKA Moscow.

Wednesday

Arsenal have an early opportunity to avenge last week's defeat by Borussia Dortmund. Chelsea play Schalke, while Celtic, who last week beat Ajax, will be looking for a quick double in Amsterdam. In cricket, England begin their state game against Australia A in Hobart.

Thursday

Cardiff one day, Kuban Krasnador the next. Isn't life fun for travelling Swansea City fans this season.

Friday

And the Rugby League World Cup group games are still going on. Today: New Zealand v Papua New Guinea.

Saturday

Two former FA Cup winners play each other in the first round: AFC Wimbledon v Coventry City.

A big afternoon of rugby union sees England face Argentina, Scotland play Japan and Wales take on South Africa. In rugby league, it's England v Fiji.
