Ainslie wins second Argo Gold Cup
Triple Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie and Team Origin put in a sublime performance added a second consecutive Argo Gold Cup in Bermuda after a nailbiting final against Jesper Radich of Denmark.
The final of the eighth grand prix in the World Match Racing Tour, which is to announce a new format next week, started with Radich showing consistently good form throughout the week with 12 wins out of 13, while Ainslie and his crew had been gaining momentum day by day.
Reflecting on his triumph, Ainslie said: "We made it hard for ourselves and had to battle all the way through but maybe what doesn¹t kill you, makes you stronger. We had fantastic racing against Jesper - it was classic stuff, as good as match racing ever gets."
The focus of the WMRT 2010 now turns to the final event of the World Match Racing Tour, the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia, whereas for Ainslie, plus team-mates Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson, thoughts also turn back to Olympic sailing after the withdrawal of Origin from the America’s Cup scene
In Almeria, Spain, Yann Guichard's crew on Groupe Edmond de Rothschild won three out of their four races in an Extreme Sailing Series joined by Dean Barker and Emirates Team New Zealand, increasing their lead to 59 points at the top of the leaderboard, with Britain’;s Mike Golding in Ecover second.
