Golf: Langer carries on good work

Bernhard Langer yesterday followed up his marvellous round on Saturday when he won the Linde German Masters in Berlin, shooting a fourth- round 70 to win by six shots.

Langer had virtually won the tournament on Saturday when his 60 had left him seven shots ahead of the field. Yesterday he made certain of securing the title when he birdied three of his first five holes, though he could not reproduce his startling form of the third round. He duly completed his 38th European Tour victory and his 10th in his native Germany to win the pounds 125,000 first prize with an aggregate of 267.

Colin Montgomerie, who hit 68, took second place on 273, and was delighted with his finish despite being six shots adrift. His second prize of pounds 83,320 left him pounds 45,249.48 ahead of Langer in his attempt to finish as the European No 1 for the fifth successive year.

Montgomerie was all smiles at the closing ceremony but he had been far from happy at the ninth hole when, disturbed by a cameraman, he put a simple pitch shot into the water guarding the green.

He bogeyed the hole and went from joint second to sixth but made birdies at the 13th, 15th and 17th to pip his Ryder Cup colleague Thomas Bjorn, who shot 69 for 274, for second place.
