Golf: Mickelson makes most of mixed fortunes
Phil Mickelson mixed seven birdies with three bogeys as he took the lead with a 68 in the second round of the Mercedes Championship in Carlsbad, California. The 23-year-old American was followed by his countryman Fred Couples, the Fijian Vijay Singh, and Grant Waite, of New Zealand, who were tied a shot behind on 139. In George, South Africa, Zimbabwe's Tony Johnstone had a one- stroke lead after the third round of the Bell's Cup, hitting a 68. He led the South African Ben Fouchee on 202.
