Golf: Mize is wise to the breeze

DAVID LEADBETTER took complete command of the Honda Classic here yesterday, through his pupils: Larry Mize, David Frost and Craig Parry.

All three Leadbetter students had a share of the second-round lead at eight under par at some point in the morning, but only Mize was able to finish on that figure, with the South African Frost dropping a shot on the last hole, and Parry taking a bogey on his final two to drop to six under.

Mize, a memorable Masters champion in 1987, won his first American tournament since Augusta six years ago, in January at Tucson. Mize had the best round of the morning, a five-under-par 67. Scores were rising as the day went on and the wind came up.

Mize said: 'Five birdies and no bogeys is pretty good today. The were several really tough pins, where the flagstick was on the same side of the green as the wind was coming from.'

After an even-par round of 72 left him five shots behind Mize's lead Nick Faldo said that he felt he was wasting an event this week. 'I'm playing good enough to be right up there. If I start holing some putts it's a different ball game. I just putted terrible. It was worse than yesterday, I had no tempo at all.'

Faldo made just one putt of any significant length all day, an eight- footer for a birdie at the 14th hole, his only birdie of the day. He had several more opportunites from inside 10 feet, but as often as not did not even graze the hole. Faldo's only bogey came from a bad shot from a fairway bunker, which was the only real problem he had tee to green.

Sandy Lyle, who scored 76 to miss the cut by two shots, came off the course saying he was 'battered and bruised'. Lyle started well, with a birdie on the first and an attempted birdie putt on the second which came out of the lip of the hole. Over the next four holes Lyle made bogeys in almost every conceivable way. He had two more after the turn, but then a birdie on the 12th, and a 15-footer for a birdie on the 13th made him think he could make the cut. But he took three putts on the 13th and the birdie he took on the next hole hardly mattered.
