COLIN MONTGOMERIE, with a superb birdie three at the final hole, won a magnificent five-man battle for the Peugeot Spanish Open in Madrid yesterday.

Richard Boxall and Mark Roe were already home on 278, 10 under par, when Montgomerie and Zimbabwe's Mark McNulty came to the 353-yard final hole.

Montgomerie hit a drive right into the middle of the fairway, and then from 80 yards used a wedge, which hit the green and spun back to two feet from the pin.

McNulty also birdied the hole to finish joint second with Boxall and Roe. Montgomerie, who was European No 1 last year, is now back on top of the European money list after five tournaments this year. Montgomerie finished with a 70 for 277, Boxall also shot 70, and Roe, McNulty and Langer all shot 71.
