Golf / The Open Championship: Carnoustie unlikely to host Open
ROYAL ST GEORGE'S will definitely stage another Open Championship, Carnoustie almost certainly will not, while the Irish course at Royal Portrush is a possible venue.
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club yesterday reflected on a 'superb' 122nd championship at Sandwich and declared that the Kent course remains on the Open rota.
Carnoustie will not be considered because of traffic and accommodation problems. However, David Hill, the Championship secretary, said Portrush might be in contention.
'We have decided not to hold an Open at Carnoustie,' Michael Bonallack, the R & A secretary, said. 'It is a magnificent course but some of the facilities make it impractical.'
