Morgan makes US Tour

The Little-known Bristol player John Morgan will be competing alongside Tiger Woods on the US Tour next season after an astonishing achievement in La Quinta, California on Monday.

Eight months into his professional career, Morgan came through the American circuit's rigorous qualifying school – 14 rounds in all – in a superb 11th place.

"It's not fully sunk in yet. But looking back it's unbelievable and frightening," said the 24-year-old, who admits he entered the school basically just to get a taste of it for the future.

"I went for the experience more or less, but winning a card just got closer and closer – and then bang. I was seventh at the first stage, ninth at the second and when I led the final stage with two rounds to go I was just flabbergasted."

A closing 76 still put him through with four strokes to spare. The former England amateur international is now off on holiday to decide just where he wants to play next season.

Having already secured a place on the European circuit via the Challenge Tour, Morgan finished with a 12-under-par total of 420 and added: "I don't want to blow my own trumpet but I left a lot of shots out there. If I'd had Tiger's experience I could have won it by a street. But I am still learning and I just hope things keep going as well as they have so far."

The German Alex Cejka, winner of the Lancôme Trophy in Paris in September, came joint second on 15 under, one behind the American Jeff Brehaut. The Swede Carl Pettersson was tied for 21st after a closing 66.

Johnny Miller's son, Andy, was another of the 38 players to earn cards, while Casey Martin, who successfully sued the PGA tour to use a golf cart in competition, failed to qualify after his game fell apart on the final few holes for a final round of 77.
