Hearts fall to early strike from Winters

Dundee United 1 Hearts 0

An early goal from Robbie Winters put Dundee United into the quarter- finals of the Scottish Cup last night. Winters' ninth goal of the season arrived after just five minutes of this fourth-round replay at Tannadice and secured a home game against either Hamilton or Motherwell in the last eight.

United made a powerful start with the Swede Lars Zetterlund rattling the underside of the Hearts crossbar with an angled drive. But disappointment turned to joy 60 seconds later when an attempted Hearts clearance only reached United's captain, Maurice Malpas. His nod back into the danger area saw Winters arrive with a well-timed run to head home from close range at the far post.

Goalkeeper Sieb Dykstra proved to be the hero for United with outstanding first-half stops from Dave McPherson and Colin Cameron, and after the break he did well to keep out headers from Paul Ritchie and McPherson.

Dundee United: Dykstra; McKinnon (Sinclair, 89), Malpas, Pressley, Perry, Pedersen, Olafsson, Zetterlund, Winters (McSwegan, 84), Dolan, McLaren (McInally, 80).

Hearts: Rousset; Locke (Robertson, 60), Naysmith, Weir, McPherson, Ritchie, Salvatori (Mackay, 46), Fulton, Hamilton, Cameron, McCann. Substitute not used: Murray.

Referee: H Dallas (Bonkle).
