Hockey: More by Luckes than judgement

Goalkeeper Dave Luckes was mobbed by his team-mates after capping an outstanding performance with two penalty stroke saves as England defeated Austria 7-5 to reach the final of the European Indoor Nations Cup, writes Brian Tatlock from Bonn. Defensive errors nearly cost England dear, but Bob Crutchley converted a fourth-minute penalty stroke to put them ahead. Don Williams started and finished off a four-man move to put England two up before Robert Mayer scored the first of his three goals for Austria. With the Austrians levelling at 2-2 on the resumption, it was Laslett who restored England's lead before Julian Halls and Laslett again took England 5-2. Mayer struck twice for Austria and then Crutchley earned a temporary suspension before he and Williams restored England's two-goal margin. In their first game of the day, England fell behind early but hit back to beat Denmark 9-5, Phil McGuire scoring four times. In the final England play Germany, who thrashed Spain 18-2 and then beat the Czech Republic 8-2.
