Hockey: Slough strike England's first medal: Bronze is the reward after shoot-out in European Club Championship

SLOUGH won the women's bronze in the European Club Championship yesterday for England's first medal in the competition. They beating Glasgow Western 4-3 in a penalty shoot- out after finishing level at full-time, writes Bill Colwill from Brussels.

In a gritty performance against a side containing nine current Scottish internationals, Slough struck in the fifth minute when Karen Brown, their captain, scored from the team's first penalty corner.

Western responded two minutes later from their first penalty corner, through Sue McDonald.

Although Slough had much the better of the second half, they failed to capitalise on five penalty corners. Then, having survived a tense seven minutes following the temporary suspension of Jane Parkinson, the shoot- out was resolved when Lesley Hobley converted the final stroke for victory.

The championship, meanwhile, returned to Germany after 18 years of Dutch supremacy when Russelsheimer won their shoot-out with Amsterdam 3-1.

In the men's competition, Sven Meinhardt's 64th minute goal gave Uhlenhorst from Germany a 1-0 win over Egara, the Spanish champions.

Havant won the men's B division final when they beat WKS Grunwald, from Poland, 4-1 in yesterday's final at Havant College. The victory gives Hounslow a place in next year's A division competition.
