Milan hit by Jardel double at home

While Manchester United struggled in Turin last night, the Portuguese champions Porto proved it is possible to win in Italy by beating Milan at San Siro.

Milan, who began their defence of their Serie A title with a 4-1 victory over Verona on Sunday, twice took the lead but the visitors pulled off the shock of the first set of games in the Champions' League when their Brazilian substitute, Jardel, scored twice in the last quarter of an hour to inspire a 3-2 victory.

Marco Simone put the home side ahead in the 14th minute, a lead they held until eight minutes after half-time when Artur scored after beating Paolo Maldini. George Weah restored Milan's advantage 15 minutes later but injured his hand in the process. The Liberian striker was carried off the pitch with his hand, which was bleeding profusely, swathed in a bandage. Milan officials later said Weah was taken to hospital to remove a gold ring which stuck into his finger when a Porto defender crushed his hand as Weah was on the ground after scoring.

Jardel, 22, headed home his first from a cross by Zlatko Zahovic after 75 minutes (having come on 12 minutes earlier) and then cashed in on an error by a defence badly missing the injured Franco Baresi and suspended Alessandro Costacurta to score the winner eight minutes later.

"Porto deserved their win," said Oscar Tabarez, the Uruguayan who replaced Fabio Capello as Milan coach at the start of the season. "They took advantage of our errors. They played very well in defence and knew how to go forward when they were behind."

The two other sides in United's group, Rapid Vienna and Fenerbahce, shared the points in Vienna. Elvir Bolic, the Bosnian striker, gave the Turkish champions the lead after half an hour, but the home side equalised in the 69th minute through Christian Stumpf.

In the other match in Rangers' group, Ajax put their disastrous start to the season behind them by winning 1-0 at the French champions, Auxerre. An outstanding goal by Jari Litmanen after four minutes proved decisive, the first away goal scored by the Dutch side in any competition this season. Despite missing several players with injuries, and four more due to suspensions, Ajax held on for a deserved win.

In Madrid, the Argentines Juan Eduardo Esnaider and Diego Simeone scored two apiece as Atletico Madrid crushed Steaua Bucharest 4-0.
