WILLIAMS-RENAULT

Damon Hill (GB, car No 0): Age 32. GPs 10. Wins 0. Championships 0.

Alain Prost (Fr, 2): Age 38. GPs 191. Wins 49. Championships 3.

STILL the dominant force in Formula One, as their 1-2 success in France last Sunday confirmed. The car-engine-fuel combination is peerless. Prost appears to be over his early season aberrations and safely on course for his fourth World Championship. Hill has proved an able accomplice and may have the opportunity, from now on, for greater self-expression.

McLAREN-FORD

Michael Andretti (US, car No 7): Age 30. GPs 8. Wins 0. Championships 0.

Ayrton Senna (Bra, 8): Age 33. GPs 150. Wins 39. Championships 3.

SURPRISED most of their rivals - and perhaps even themselves - with the competitiveness of their all-new car at the start of the season and, aided by rain, Senna made full use of it. In normal circumstances, however, the championship remains an unequal struggle, even for the Brazilian. The real opposition now comes from Benetton-Ford.

BENETTON-FORD

Michael Schumacher (Ger, car No 5): Age 24. GPs 30. Wins 1. Champs 0.

Riccardo Patrese (It, 6): Age 39. GPs 248. Wins 6. Championships 0.

NOW performing more competitively. Took the calculated risk of loading on technology and suffered the inevitable teething problems, yet approach the second half of the campaign optimistic of beating McLaren to second place behind Williams. Schumacher is demonstrating his rare talent, although Patrese still looks ill at ease alongside him.

Aguri Suzuki (Japan, 10): Age 32. GPs 51. Wins 0. Championships 0.
