David Coulthard clocked the second-fastest time of the day when he returned to Formula One action yesterday. Coulthard, testing in Estoril 24 hours after Williams had emerged victorious in their legal tussle with McLaren for his services in 1995, clocked1min 20.02 sec, two-hundredths of a second slower than Rubens Barrichello, driving a Jordan. Coulthard's Williams' team-mate, Damon Hill, clocked 1:19.57 on Wednesday.

New chassis rules announced for the 1996 Indianapolis 500 will force Indy car teams to bring an entirely new car to the richest event in motor racing, according to some team owners. The rules, designed to reduce cornering speeds, will force sidepods to be raised and shortened and their airflow reduced to lessen downforce. The tubs, which include the cockpit, must be widened and the wings will be limited and reduced.
