The Japanese rider Daijiro Kato has died after failing to recover from serious injuries sustained in a crash during the Grand Prix of Japan two weeks ago.

The 26-year-old injured his neck, head and chest after crashing into a wall at Suzuka, which is considered one of the most dangerous circuits in the MotoGP championships. He died on Saturday.

Kato, a former 250cc world champion, was in a coma when he was rushed to the Yokkaiichi Central hospital by helicopter after the crash.
